Let's Talk About Pain

Chronic Pain and Whiplash

Did you know that imaging now makes it possible to see who is going to get chronic pain from whiplash?

About 25 percent of those with a whiplash injury will experience chronic pain and stability. Recently, using MRI imaging, Northwestern Medicine scientists were able to identify which whiplash patients would fall into that group.

Under imaging, the scientists could see that the 25 percent that developed chronic pain had large amounts of fat infiltrating the patient's neck muscles. This type of infiltration indicates deterioration in the area. The deterioration causes pain.
