Chronic Pain: Fear & the Future

Does chronic pain today mean worse pain tomorrow?

Chronic pain is a thief. It takes away our enjoyment of day to day life. It prevents us from doing the activities that we love. It keeps us awake at night. But the worst thing about chronic pain is that it often steals our hope.At least once a day a patient asks me if the back pain or the head pain or the joint pain they are experiencing today means that they are going to be suffering unimaginably ten years from now. They fear that the future will bring them an inability to walk, a bed-bound existence where the only thing they will have to look forward to is the next pain pill.

Well, I can assure you that pain today does not necessarily mean pain tomorrow. And if you do have pain tomorrow, it probably won’t be any more severe or more debilitating than the pain you have today.

Most people will experience some form of chronic pain during their lifetime. Usually though the pain will not be an uninterrupted trek from independence to dependence. For most people, pain will be episodic; there will be periods of discomfort followed by periods of relative comfort.

When you are experiencing it though, it’s hard to remember that the pain won’t be unending.

You have some weapons you can use to fight the depression bought on by chronic pain.Exercise can make our bodies stronger by strengthening our muscles so as to provide additional support for weak or painful areas.

Interventional procedures can help relieve the inflammation in an area so the body can heal itself. Alternatively, when pain is a result of a faulty nerve signal, interventional procedures can interrupt the cycle so the signal can get back on the right track.

The most effective weapon against chronic pain is hope. Your pain will ease.

Don’t let chronic pain cast a shadow on your future. Know that if you are like most people, you will find some eventual relief. You will have days where you will enjoy doing the things you love. Pain today may well be gone tomorrow.
