In Chronic Pain: Five Tips for the Holidays

Hanging ornaments, rigging lights, and wrapping gifts are just a few of the tasks that we do during the holidays. For many people this is a festive time of year. What do you do when you just aren’t up to it because of your chronic pain? How do you deal with the additional stress over your inability to do these things?

Focus:

Focus on the things you can do. While you may not be comfortable doing many of the physical things demanded by the season, there are less strenuous enjoyable activities that you can do. Concentrate on these things.

Celebrate:

Celebrate the month by counting down the days to the new year by making a list of all the things you feel comfortable doing but don’t do often. This list can include things as small as having a dish of peppermint ice cream or as big as entertaining family. Treat yourself by doing at least one thing on the list everyday.

Perspective:

Keep the season in perspective. During the rest of the year we are often nostalgic about the holidays because we remember the intangible things, such as sitting in a warm kitchen with a cup of hot chocolate on a cold day visiting with loved ones. These moments are the gift of the holiday season; the heart of what we love about December. Don’t be distracted by the glitter.

Limits:

Know your limits and be gentle with yourself. In seasons past you may have been able to do more, but being able to do more doesn’t mean that your holidays were better. Often slowing down and enjoying the simple things can make this time of year more fulfilling. Remember that it’s quality not quantity.

Communicate:

Communicate to family and friends how you are feeling. Explain that your chronic pain may keep you from participating in all of their planned activities. Let them know that you want to spend time with them, but it may have to occur at an alternative time or day. Learn to say “no” without feeling guilty.
